Project Background
AVP had an existing, static website that gave a basic outline of what they were about and who their partners were. As part of a marketing push and in recognition of the value of having a web space, AVP decided to re-vamp their website with the ability to self-update news stories and to have a more expansive, polished look and feel.
Project Discussion
Axiom approached us with regard to facilitating their web design.Axiom's design called for a coordinated approach to Flash and Javascript publishing. The brief outlined a need for a single page to which multiple pockets of content could be imported depending on navigational clicks by the end user.
Initially we were skeptical at whether this could be reliably done accross all platforms and browsers. The technology needed, Ajax and Flash are notoriously temperamental on various browsers. After testing quick and dirty mock-ups on Ajax page loads we were fairly confident we could do the work to a reliable state.
The Project required more finesse and patience than we'd originally anticipated due to the complexity of what we were trying to do and the load placed on the end-user's cpu.
Project Solution
The Embeded flash movie needed to be resizable to accommodate two different layout formats. Since this is not acheivable we opted for embeding the flash movie in an iframe and resizing the iframe accordingly. The communication between cross-platform browsers meant defining within the flash movie whether we were talking to it from a mac or pc browser and therefore, whether we were going to fire off a getURL javascript call or an FSCommand call. Ironing out this provided the momentum to carry the project through to completion.
The Result
Marrying Ajax with Flash was a nightmare when considering making it as robust and cross-browser tolerant as possible.
The result is extremely satisfying to play with and having ridden through some untested areas, and come out the other side all the wiser we would most certainly look to implementing this sort of setup again.
Service/Product highlights
This project took several complex services such as Flash and Ajax and rolled them into a stronger, more stylish product.
